Your department

The Digital Service Factory is a new department being established within Technology (R&D). The DSF develops digital services – such as a customer portal, connected systems, performance reporting and predictive maintenance – in close cooperation with the Vanderlande Business Units (BU’s) and its customers. The department is organized around dedicated multidisciplinary teams who work closely together with other teams from Technology, ICT, BU’s and external partners. Key in this are service design thinking, agile way of working and a relentless focus on data and insights.

Your tasks and responsibilities

As Development Manager, you ensure that the agile teams follow best-in-class and standard tools, processes and practices and that the teams deliver highest possible value in a timely fashion. You are the line manager of the agile team-members, you guide them in their professional development, and you make the DSF an inspiring working environment. You work closely together with the Product Owners and Product/Solution Architects to understand what capabilities and competences are required to deliver the Digital Service development roadmap. You will advise on, and initiate the start of new product teams when needed and you will bring structure within the individual teams and at the DSF level on overarching competences and capabilities. You have a clear (outwards) view on latest developments on enabling tooling and technologies and you know how to apply these to strengthen the capabilities of the teams. You align and share best practices with other Development Managers within Vanderlande. Together with other Development Managers you will prepare us for our Digital Transformation by growing the data literacy and digital savviness within the organization. You report directly to the Managing Director Digital Service Factory and will be part of the Digital Service Factory Management Team.

Responsibilities

  • Manage development capacity and capabilities of the Digital Service Factory. Mentor and coach direct reports (growing to 15 FTE of data engineers, developers, data scientist and product architects). Recruit and onboard new talents.

  • Apply best practices for the full digital service development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations

  • Deliver software with increasing use of automation for testing and delivery

  • Drive increasing development performance with KPI based metrics around quality, lead time, deployment frequency, etc. and communicate with management/stakeholders on those metrics and milestones

  • Advise product owners in team composition; manage resource capacity conflicts with Delivery Manager

  • Stay up to date with latest developments on enabling tooling and technologies. Build a resource capability roadmap to deliver the Digital Services development roadmap

  • Create and maintain relationship with senior management in Vanderlande’s global (software) development organization to leverage on the global available capabilities and capacity

  • Share and learn best practices with the global development organization, ensuring consistency in product quality and serviceability

  • Initiate and drive the competences and capability roadmap needed for the Digital Transformation of Vanderlande

  • Prepare the global organization for decentralization of competences and capabilities to be able to cope with the expected growth in the domain and cater for specific regional needs

  • Occasionally pair/mob with the team or individuals to coach/guide/develop capabilities in collaboration with the product/solution architects

Your qualifications and skills

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent

  • Minimum of 10 years’ of technical/operational experience managing software development teams in application architectures and software products

  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience as HR-responsible manager of international multi-disciplinary software teams

  • Excellent understanding of how to establish and scale Lean and Agile approaches/ delivery models

  • Experience with developing and embedding digital services ideally in large(r ) organizations

  • Technical background with development of cloud solutions (Azure), enterprise software development, CI/CD, IoT, etc. Able to level with Solution and Product Architects within the DSF and translate ambitions into competencies and capabilities needed within the development teams.

  • Working experience with Atlassian tools (JIRA, Confluence, etc.)

  • Strong analytical/leadership abilities and ability to motivate and guide team members on their personal development journeys

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and presentation skills

  • Inspirational yet pragmatic and capable of balancing individual and team needs
