Reporting to the Safety Program Manager, the Industrial HSE Engineer will participate and support Vanderlande’s Design Safety Initiatives. Candidate will have the ability to evaluate mechanical, electrical, and communications systems operational risk profiles by leveraging years of industry experience to determine appropriate solutions and drive implementation of design safety through entire project and/or product life cycle and drive to closed loop corrective action. Must possess operational and design safety experience in service, automation manufacturing, or similar industry.

The Industrial HSE Engineer will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including production, engineering, operations, and maintenance (O&M), to implement safety measures and protocols that align with industry standards and company policies. The responsibilities of the Industrial HSE Engineer will include oversight of safety program with relevant oversight of design, manufacturing, and operational requirements related to safety. During new product introduction this individual will engage in design reviews of hardware working with our project engineers, project managers and O&M teams to ensure all safety requirements are met in products and service delivery.

Role Responsibilities

 Design Safety Case Escalation and Follow-Up – 50%

  • Manage safety cases through entire life cycle and drive to closed loop corrective action.
  • Update and provide guidance to management and cross functional teams as required, obtaining internal approvals and clearance on content.
  • Oversee safety related improvements and campaigns as required working with our project engineers, project managers and O&M teams.

 Design for Safety Best Practices – 30%

  • Review safety features and implementations on current and future projects, products, and services.
  • Identify safety requirements as required working with our project engineers, project managers and O&M teams and manage through implementation.
  • Candidate will be responsible to drive hardware, organization, and process improvement to ensure highest levels of product and design safety are maintained.

 Management Presentations – 10%

  • Present monthly safety KPI updates to management and provide as input into monthly HSE and BU scorecards.
  • Present key design safety topics in calls with our project engineers, project managers and O&M teams and drive improvement actions as required.

 Safety Training and Compliance Program – 10%

  • Develop content and oversee deployment of training program ensuring compliance on training completion for Vanderlande operations as well as internal staff.
  • Advise Vanderlande project and operations teams on regulations, regulatory compliance concerns, and good engineering practices relating to systems design.

Billability

  • Maintain a billability of 70% and above.

Travel

  • Work Travel – 30-40% (Domestic and international).
  • Must possess an active passport for international travel.

Other responsibilities

  • Support Vanderlande project and product design safety initiatives – risk assessment process, functional safety, development of safety requirement specifications, emergent issues (products) and compliance issues and matters.
  • Develop and complete industrial and design risk assessments and evaluations in accordance with ISO12100 and ANSI B11 practices.
  • Support the development of policies, standards, training, and safe operating procedures; to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Contribute to building a safety culture that enables Vanderlande technical and engineering teams develop safe and compliant products, systems, and solutions.
  • Support the planning and execution of HSE NA training programs for employees, helping to raise awareness and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
  • Participate in incident investigations under the guidance of senior HSE personnel to identify root causes and contribute to recommendations for corrective actions.

Knowledge-Skills-Abilities: 

  • Strong track record of successful safety project management.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills including understanding complex issues and properly communicate issues to other stakeholders written.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to track, follow-up and communicate milestones.
  • Strong problem solving and process improvement capabilities.
  • Detail-oriented with good organizational skills.
  • High levels of independence and assertiveness, and high ethical standards.
  • Ability to effectively explain and integrate requirements with operational efficiencies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial, safety and mechanical engineering or equivalent major
  • PE License or any professional certification desired
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with online systems for data entry and reporting preferred.
  • Experience with normal business-related software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Experience managing a process or procedure requiring a strong sense of ownership and attention to detail.
  • Ability to evaluate and resolve complex problems in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge in key strategies for manufacturing environments, such as: Lean Manufacturing principles, Value Stream Management, workplace organization & 5S, standard work, kanban, manufacturing execution systems (MES) and enterprise resource planning (ERP), and Six Sigma
