Job Description – Supplier Quality Engineer

The Supplier Quality Engineer is part of Supply Chain Quality and drives the activities to ensure materials delivered to project teams conform to specifications and other operational quality departmental activities.

The Supplier Quality Engineer works closely with the Supplier Quality Assurance team of Supply Chain Centre – Europe within the Supply Chain business unit.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 2 to 3 years related supplier quality experience.

Essential Functions (Job Duties and Responsibilities):

  • Ensure & drive Vanderlande’s Supplier Corrective Action Report (SCAR) process, including creating SCARs in the JD Edward system and monitoring their progress, ensuring effective communication with stakeholders, Single Point of Contact (SPOC), and suppliers.

  • Convert Omnitracker tickets to the JIRA system and ensure their progression, maintaining close monitoring to ensure timely resolution.

  • Track and ensure completion of Supplier corrective actions, maintaining a closed loop of SCARs, and monitor Supplier Performance trends, providing regular reports to stakeholders and internal teams such as sourcing and ordering departments.

  • Address Supplier Quality issues promptly, offering timely solutions to Vanderlande project teams, and engage in Problem-solving activities of medium complexity, documenting actions using the 8D methodology.

  • Work closely with the Shipping, Ordering, and Sourcing teams to ensure timely resolution of supplier quality issues for the project team

  • Help in data gathering related to Supplier quality issues and present the resulting data output.

  • Create and maintain concessions, TILs (Technical Information Letters), and all type of documentation related to Supplier Quality activities.

  • Support Supplier and Internal audits as a co-auditor, contributing to the enhancement of audit processes and quality assurance measures.

  • Drive departmental process improvements, serving as a proactive partner in quality assurance enhancements and related processes, implementing optimized workflows.

  • Evaluate quality issues, accurately classifying defects and determining priority levels for resolution.

  • Initiate Supplier Corrective Action requests and oversee their progress until closure for assigned suppliers, ensuring adherence to quality standards.

  • Lead 8D activities across the supply base, driving improvements in supplier performance and fostering collaborative problem-solving approaches.

  • Implement containment actions to stop the continued production and use of non-conforming products internally and externally. Report actions taken and escalate systemic issues.

Continuous improvement and measurement

  • Monitor and populate quality metrics and KPIs (actual vs. goal, performance, workload)

  • Work with all departments to mitigate process deviations before they develop into quality problems.

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to understand and explain blueprint requirements (GD&T, ASME Y14.5, weld symbols AWS & ISO standards)

  • Knowledge of inspection equipment, including calibration requirements, Gage R&R, MSA.

  • Experience with dimensional and form inspection techniques, inspection limits, corrections…

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes (laser, bending, welding, coating, machining, casting…)

  • Sound knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001…) and assessment/audit techniques

  • Sound knowledge of lean and sustainability requirements, ability to assess suppliers

  • Knowledge of problem-solving techniques and root cause analysis, 8D, 5 Why, etc   

  • Sound knowledge of First Article approval process (PPAP, PSW, Failure Modes and Effect Analysis-FMEA, Control Plans, work instructions)

  • Sound knowledge of Statistical Process Control concepts (Process Capability studies, Cpk, 6 sigma…)

  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point, Visio

Interpersonal and soft skills (Competencies):

  • Good communication skills (English) enable effective interaction with peers, superiors, and other stakeholders. This includes verbal and written communication as well as active listening.

  • Basic ability to provide feedback to colleagues, although this could be further developed for more impactful communication.

  • Basic proficiency in presenting information within the department, indicating the ability to effectively convey ideas and information to a group.

  • Able to share work experience with peers, demonstrating an aptitude for learning and adapting.

  • Demonstrates initiative and motivation within their own processes, showing the ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks.

  • Able to effectively plan, organize, and prioritize tasks within their own processes to meet deadlines and objectives efficiently.

  • Capable of making decisions and taking appropriate actions within their own processes, showing autonomy and accountability.

  • Basic proficiency in collaborating and supporting team members across the organization, indicating a willingness to work cooperatively towards shared objectives.

  • Basic proficiency in problem-solving methodologies like 8D and the ability to participate effectively in problem-solving teams to address issues as they arise.
