Lead Front-end Software Engineer

I’ve always wanted to work in the meeting point between technology and business – an ambition that is being realised at Vanderlande. The work here is really exciting. With a focus on optimising asset performance and AI-powered proactive services, I’m involved in cutting-edge projects that help transform our customer relationships into long-term partnerships.

The company delivers large complex systems to the warehousing, airports and parcel sectors. The service aspect is an important part of what we provide, and we create many digital services that offer insights into the performance of our logistic processes.

Along with creating intelligent digital solutions, such as extensive KPI dashboards, we’re harnessing the latest and greatest technologies within the DSP to work on new topics like predictive maintenance. By leveraging AI, we’re finding ways to accurately detect anomalies in equipment before they break.

Part of my job as a lead front-end engineer is to create software engineering standards and directions for our teams. I’m also involved in formulating strategy for the way we develop our solutions, liaising with other software teams and management. Another task that I really enjoy is coaching and supporting other engineers in our department.

As well as enabling me to leverage my technical knowledge, this broad mix of work has helped me to develop my people skills. Across the company there are many opportunities for professional and personal growth. Just ten months into the job, I’ve been given the scope to work on subjects that meet my ambitions and interests. For example, I’m involved in initiatives that relate to business strategy, recruitment and staffing within our department, and have honed my skills to deliver presentations to our executives in a high-stakes environment.

I have a great manager who has coached me to think about the different directions I can take. In the future, I could see myself becoming a product owner, focusing on customers’ business needs. However, a technical route is also open to me, so I could end up becoming a software architect.

Vanderlande has a terrific work-life balance, which is ingrained in its culture. This gives me the confidence to fulfil a major life goal – completing an MBA in Data Analytics through part-time study. Vanderlande is the perfect place to use what I learn in my work, helping me to build my career.

Much of the enjoyment I get from the job is down to the people that make this such a special place to work. I’m very fortunate to collaborate with an amazing, diverse and interesting group of colleagues. We’ve been able to strike the perfect balance between professionalism and fun.

I have also become friends with many of them outside work, some of whom share my love of padel, a fast-growing racket sport. A growing group of us get together and play after work. Like me, they’re hooked!
