Assignment type: Internship / Graduation
Start date: September 2023
Assignment duration: 6 months
Location: Veghel
Educational Level: Bachelor / Master
Desired study: Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or related
Language: English
Description of the assignment
At Vanderlande, we specialize in designing and developing advanced material handling systems, with a large part of our product portfolio consisting of conveyors. A significant issue when transferring products from one conveyor to another is the slip behavior of the products. To improve the performance of our systems, we aim to gain a better understanding of this slip behavior. By doing so, we can operate closer to the limits of our systems, which will enable us to realize a higher system capacity. To achieve this, we plan to develop a measurement tool that can be used at multiple locations, including our own test center and at customer sites. Our focus for this project is on the parcel sortation market, enabling us to design the measurement tool optimally suited for this application.
To develop a successful measurement tool, we aim to conduct extensive research on the slip behavior of parcels during the sortation process. This will involve studying the materials used for packaging, the weight and dimensions of the parcels, and the surface properties of the conveyors. We also need to identify the key factors that affect slip behavior, such as the speed of the conveyor, the angle of the transfer, and the amount of friction between the surfaces.
Description of department
You will join the Technology department, also known as the "R&D" department. This department is responsible for both maintenance and new product development, working to turn innovative ideas into products that can be used in customer projects.
The Technology department is organized according to the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and operates in Agile teams, which are often multi-disciplinary. This means you will be collaborating with colleagues from various backgrounds and fields of expertise to achieve shared goals. You will receive appropriate guidance from an experienced R&D Engineers in order to learn all the tricks of the trade.
The majority of your work will take place at our Veghel campus, where you will be working alongside other highly skilled and experienced R&D Engineers . However, you may occasionally visit customer sites to gain a better understanding of their needs, collect data, or troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
Overall, the Technology department is an exciting and rewarding place to work, offering plenty of opportunities to make a significant impact on the development and success of our company.
Tasks/responsibilities
- Construct a model based on math and physics.
- Design a tool setup, deployable on multiple locations
- Verify the tool in the physical world (test centre) and document the findings.
- Demonstrate the tool to stakeholders
- Hand over knowledge of the tool to supervisor (and possibly others).
Skills
- Knowledge of physics (educated in for example mechanical engineering or mechatronics)
- Software skills: preferably MATLAB, but alternatives (like Phyton) can be discussed
