Providing a smooth transition from project delivery to fully operational sites

Meet our colleague Floor Baas: she’s been working at Vanderlande for several years now. She has fulfilled several roles and is currently working as a Project Manager Operational Readiness. But what does that mean?

In her current role, Floor supports the internal organisation and the customer in the transition from project to a fully operational site. Floor explains: “For our customers this can be a stressful time as they often don’t know what to expect (especially when it’s the first time automating something). When automating parts of their business, one of their core competencies will be ‘taken over’ by the automation. Our department then advises and/or guides the customer on topics that should be in place to run a smooth operation. Within Vanderlande it is also possible that we facilitate/advise in the service take-over phase.”

The department

Operational Readiness is part of our internal Service Organisation. In the department all colleagues have a similar role, but within different projects. In the small team (four people) expertise is being shared. For example on how to improve the way of working in every project.

Floor: “We work together with the project organisation as well as with the service organisation and the customer. In the end, our goal is to help in an efficient take-over from project to service and a smooth ramp-up for the customer.”

The job: fun, never boring and challenging!

“The fun part of the job is that I get to work together with so many different disciplines. From Integration Engineers and Field Service Specialists, to Process Engineering and Reliability Engineering, but as well the Spare Parts department and Global Service Desk. We aim to be involved an early stage of the project. This way we can help the project team to deliver the project in a way our service organisation can work with it. Also, we help the service organisation to be prepared when a project is finished. And last but not least, trying to let the customer be successful with their new system from day 1! All the different stakeholders make our job fun, never boring and challenging!”

Floor enjoys her job and has several moments to be proud of: “Operational readiness is something that costs more time and money in an early stage but prevents major damage in the end. I’m proud to see that our team is being asked to step in into projects in an early stage more and more. This is because we did a good job in previous projects and people see the added value of bringing in our expertise in an early stage.”
